I have another great round-up for you this week: 6 Elements for Creating Farmhouse Style that can be done in any style home. Whether you live in the country, the city, or somewhere in between, adding these simple touches will create an inviting rustic farmhouse look.


Last week was fairly busy for me with my 20 month old having hernia surgery on Friday. Thankfully all went well, and he is bouncing back very quickly! I have no posts to recap, so it is right on to the round-up from last week’s link-up:

6 Elements for Creating Farmhouse Style {in any home}

1. Adding Architectural Pieces

I fell in love with this rustic mantel and insert from The Hedgehog Life, as soon as I laid eyes on it. The simple design of the mantel contrasts nicely with the decorative insert.

Even if you live in a newly constructed home or one lacking in character, it can be easy to make it your own, by adding worn pieces and giving them a second chance. By shopping at architectural salvage shops, thrift stores, and garage sales, you can find unique antique pieces to bring the farmhouse feel your home may lack.
I have all new windows in my older home and am always trying to find ways to make them more aesthetically appealing. I love this idea, from My 1929 Charmer, of adding vintage windows in front of vinyl ones. It’s a creative change that adds so much rustic character.

2. Incorporating the Old & Worn

A simple way to bring farmhouse style quickly and inexpensively is by incorporating old and worn items. This grouping from Must Love Junk, consists of an old metal bucket, ticking fabric and grain sacks, which all have farmhouse appeal. You can pick up items like these at flea markets all summer long.

You can also source rustic and industrial farmhouse elements online all year long, like this rusty iron hook available at The Penny and the Pearl. It would look amazing added to a unique gallery wall.

3. Vignette Decorating

Adding farmhouse style can be done in any home by creating decorative vignettes with rustic pieces. This fern themed vignette from Have a Daily Cup of Mrs. Olson is a perfect example. The hints of green and natural items add a fresh look with the chippy, architectural elements.
A vignette can be created with a variety of items, like this one from Shabby Love, which incorporates dark and masculine pieces with rustic finds. The best part about vignette decorating is that it can easily be rearranged or tweaked season to season or whenever the mood strikes.

4. Painted Furniture

Another staple to achieving farmhouse style, is painted furniture. I absolutely love this Paris Grey dresser from Oliver and Rust. Annie Sloane chalk paint was used to transform this piece into a magnificent farmhouse style dresser that could work in any room in the home.
It is amazing how much a coat of paint can transform otherwise undesirable pieces, like this Serene blue side table from Distressed Donna Down Home. She took a piece that most people probably wouldn’t give a second look to and breathed new life into it. The sanded finish and decorative stenciling on top give it even more charm and character. There are so many possibilities for creating farmhouse style with a good can of paint and paintbrush in hand. 

5. Displaying Treasured Finds

Of course, farmhouse style must contain treasured collections and vintage finds. My favorites include ironstone pottery and white china like this piece from Hogg Barn Antiques. Items like these need not be purely decorative. You could easily use them in every day life for storage of small items, as planters, or practical kitchen use.
A grouping of simple natural elements and antique finds can quickly give a home character. I love this clock face from Old World Patina along with the other collected treasures grouped here.

6. Bringing the Indoors Out

Bringing outdoor items inside is an important part of farmhouse decor as we can see in the previous elements. But, the same is true for the outdoors. By bringing items that might normally reside inside out, any porch or outdoor space can get a nod to farmhouse style. I am enamored with this decorated porch from Faded Charm. The architectural pieces and decorative tin on the side of the house definitely create a rustic farmhouse feel in this inviting space.
This old chippy chair with bird nest vignette, from Heart Rocks in My Pocket, is another great example. The platters and dishes, holding the collection of nests, make this a true conversation piece as visitors are welcomed to the space.
