Choosing Boy’s Bedroom Furniture

Thank you to Raymour & Flanigan for providing the furniture in this space. All expressed opinions are 100% my own. Full Disclosure.

Last Friday, I shared with you guys Hazel’s bedroom transformation, and as promised, today I am showing off Owen’s! He just turned five at the end of September and loves all things red, Ninja Turtles, and superheroes. He has never had his own room, until our move to our new home over the summer.

The transition was rough the first few months, since he was afraid to be on his own at night, but with the help of some new furniture, and doing up his room with his favorites, that all changed!

His room started off basically a blank slate with hardwood floors and off white walls. We are still making decisions about paint colors and window treatments for all of the rooms, but went ahead deciding on furniture and accessories. Here is how his room looked when we moved in:

Owen’s biggest request for his room was bunk beds. He has been wanting them ever since we stayed at a rental home in the Adirondacks that had them. He fell in love. His color preference for everything in his room is red: his favorite color. But, I wanted his furniture to be a little more practical and have pieces that could grow with him even if he changed his mind about colors.

Owen and I had a mother-son date bunk bed shopping, and he was so excited when we found the Jordan Twin-Over-Twin Storage Bunk Bed at Raymour & Flanigan. It was perfect for his room because his space is on the smaller side, and extra storage is always good! It has two drawers and a cubby for toys, books, etc.

We also got two King Koil Perfect Response Euro Top Twin Mattresses and one Twin Bunkie Board for the bottom bunk. We did get one for the top, but ended up returning it because it made the mattress too high. He’s not too big on sleeping on the top bunk, but likes hanging out up there during the day and making forts and caves in the lower bunk. One of his favorite things to do!

Owen has never had his own dresser either (Hazel and him shared one when they shared a room in our previous home), so we decided on the Graco Samantha Small Kids’ Bedroom Chest. The color matched the bed perfectly even though they were not from the same set and this one is just the right size for him. It fits great in his bedroom and helped us get all of his clothes off the floor!

Owen’s current favorite characters are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so when I found this multi-bin toy organizer that Raymour & Flanigan had available online, I knew we had to have it for his room.

Now, Owen is loving his new room and has had no problems staying alone in there at night. Hazel has even spent a few nights on the top bunk having a “slumber party” together 🙂 It feels so good to give both kids rooms they are proud of and love to spend time in. I will share more details from Owen’s space and all of the sources for his room in a post soon!

Till next time…

It's the perfect boy's room! My son would have loved everything about it (just switch the Turtles with Power Rangers). I remeber when we finally moved into a house where the kids could have their own room…it was so much fun to decorate them. My son loved his bunk bed too and slept on the bottom one while playing on the top. Thanks for sharing (and bringing back sweet memories)!
