French Syle Living Room in a Town House

Livingroom3

In continuation of my previous home tour post…I am welcoming you into “le Salon”…{the living room}…and the place were we spend the majority of our time…

Livingroom1

I will also try to answer some of the many questions that I have been receiving about our home in this post as well.

Livingroom2

As mentioned in the Cottage of the Month feature, our gold damask sofa was purchased 2 years ago at a sale for only $50.00. It was an amazing find and one of my favorite pieces…

Livingroom11

One of the questions I have been getting quite a bit, is about the roses in our mercury glass vases…they are real and were actually purchased at our local grocery store (Wegman’s) for only $9.99 a dozen. I frequently get roses from here because they seem to last so long and are such a great deal. And there is nothing like fresh flowers to brighten a room!

Livingroom9

Livingroom4

My favorite lamp (below) was purchased at a flea market nearby for only $10.00. And the yellow screen, on the left of it, was purchased for only $30.00. I do love a bargain!

Livingroom10

Livingroom12

On the shelf above the sofa, I have placed a collection of gold frames, my favorite Iron Stone pottery, dried roses, vintage clocks, a few old books, and a tin picture frame.

Livingroom5

Livingroom6

Josh created the corner shelf below from an old door that we found on the side of the road. We painted the outside white and the interior a pale gray. Another question I often receive is about the paint used in this room…it is called “Cashmere White” and was done in 10″ stripes of glossy and flat. The paint was purchased at Wal-Mart and is available, off the shelf, in semi-gloss, which is what I have used on several of our furniture pieces, including this corner shelf.

Livingroom14

We have a growing collection of old suitcases, which I enjoy using in my decor. They not only give a unique look, but also serve as great storage, especially when living in such a small space that doesn’t offer much storage on its own. I especially love darker, brown and black pieces mixed in with white and cream.

Livingroom15

The armoire below was given to me by my dad {someone gave it to him for free!}, and has seen several different coats of paint…and no doubt will see more in the future. I have not achieved the “look” I want for it just yet, but it does serve it’s purpose….storing the TV! The aubusson rug below was quite a steal when I found it at a flea market for only $12.00.

Livingroom13

The over sized chair below is the “coveted” spot in the living room. Josh and I take turns with it (but I must admit…I do get it more than him ;)…and Renoir enjoys curling up at my feet on the ottoman.

Livingroom16

Renoir does find many places to curl up though…not just the ottoman. He has his “spot” on the couch and enjoys snuggling in the pillows in the chair below…(and he is Cairn Terrier…another question I get frequently 😉

Livingroom7

The Mother-of-Pearl opera glasses below were purchased from my dear friend, Tracie’s shop My Petite Maison. I absolutely love these {and visiting her shop…she has the best French finds!}!

Livingroom8

Another question I often receive is whether or not Josh enjoys living in such a “romantic” home and whether he enjoys the same style as I do…and the answer…YES…he absolutely does! In fact, he is the one who often finds the best pieces to bring home. He does enjoy the more neutral palette of off-white, gold, and darker pieces mixed in…but…if I wanted to paint everything pink he would let me {I wouldn’t of course since that is not my style} but he does give me full creative freedom with our home and encourages me every step of the way.

I hope that you have enjoyed this second installment of my “home tour” and that you will come back soon to view the dining room and then eventually…the boudoir…{ooh la la!}…

Till next time…

Your home is just so beautiful Miss Alice… I LOVE your sofa… and I LOVE that screen! It is stunning.
I still can’t believe how much your style has changed from lots of pink to your new beautiful french style. Everything you do is gorgeous… I love how you aren’t afraid to change things up a bit. I am working on that myself! haha
I am wondering… what did you do with that chippy pink coffee table??? I HOPE you still have that beauty! lol

  • Alice W.

    Thanks Heather!
And yes…I do still have that coffee table! It is serving as storage in our
studio right now…I hope to have a “family room” someday where I can put it
with a big slip covered sofa…
but if you are ever in the area and want it..I’ll give you a good
    deal…lol!

I certainly enjoyed the “tour”. You have quite the flair for decorating with the things you obviously love and an eye for spotting a bargain price for luxury items. I’d like to ask where you purchased the white slipcover for the oversized chair? Everything I find is too small. Thanks again for sharing. Debbie

  • Alice W.

    Thanks Debbie!
I found the slip cover on eBay for about 20.00 I think. It was over a year
ago, but the seller may still offer them (I can’t recall now who I purchased
    it from though).

Just lovely, as always. I hadn’t noticed that your walls were striped, but now that I know, wow – what a great idea to mix flat and glossy stripes. Such a wonderfully soft look.

And you always seem to find such great bargains at thrift stores. Very envious of this. 🙂

Such a cozy and inviting home. Knowing how you have beautifully put all your “deals” together inspires me to go out and find some deals to feather my nest! Thanks for sharing your home.

Just the thing I needed on this gloomy day here in California, Alice. The tour is beautiful of Le Salon, I would love to put my feet up a bit and take in all the beauty… and then, of course, go shopping with you. You find the most beautiful items at a great price I might add (lucky you!). Thank you for sharing! Oh, and hello Renoir, you look darling.
I am finally packaging up your latest purchase from the shoppe to add to your collection. It will be most happy in all beauty that surrounds your home.

Everything in you home is so very lovely! But, I think, the best “find” must be your agreeable hubby:) I have one of those, too…my hubby usually follows my lead when it comes to decorating & such!

  • Marian/Dutchy

I am a first time visitor, but certainly not a last time one! I love your home and decor. I myself love Pink and Ivory, and seeing all your lovelies…..WOW adorable!!
Hugs from Marian from the Netherlands, and come visit my blog if you feel so inclined 🙂

    Hi Alice!
I really enjoyed the tour of your home. I’ll hop over to the Cottage of the Month and have a look there. I love the way your home is so lovely with so many inexpensive and vintage items. It just goes to show you can have a really beautiful home without spending a fortune. I love your couch and drew some inspiration from your pictures. I have a large wall and have been trying to think what I can put on there since it is so huge – one big thing or lots of small things? – and I love your idea of picture frames inside picture frames. Just lovely! I’m not quite sure how to go to your flickr to see the other photos, but I’d love to go have a lovely long look!
    Warmest regards
    Vickie….

I frequently buy roses at Wegman’s, too…they are beautiful and do tend to last close to two weeks…I even have the same mercury glass vase/candle holder you have them in! HomeGoods?
We are both blessed with wonderful husbands who appreciate and encourage our unique snese of style!
And girl, you do have STYLE!
