Fletcher’s Little Blue Truck’s Halloween Birthday Party

Can you believe my little Fletcher just turned two on October 14th? It’s still hard to believe how fast the time goes by. He is a sweet, happy, funny little guy who loves to get into mischief (and believe me…he does!).

He especially loves to read with me, which I love too. His current favorite is anything Little Blue Truck related. So, with his birthday being two weeks before Halloween, we decided to throw together a no fuss Little Blue Truck’s Halloween party for him. If you aren’t familiar with the Little Blue Truck books, they are basically sweet rhyming books that have charming illustrations and stories about being a good friend and helper. All of my kids have loved them through the years.

This theme worked out great all around because we could keep out most of the Halloween decorations that we already had out. We just added Little Blue Truck themed items to go along with them. It was super easy and fun to put together.

I originally thought of titling this post “embracing less than pinterest-perfect parties” because that is what I really want to talk about today. The struggle to be perfect, in the days of social media, is so real. I feel it, often, and that is why I walk away from social media every so often to go back to real life and just enjoy the simplicity.

And the birthday parties that you can come across when scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram? Sigh. There are so many beautiful and fun ideas and swoon worthy photographs (most likely taken by professionals). It can be overwhelming. Which is why I have also backed away from elaborate parties in the past several years.

I spent a lot of years stressing about throwing perfect parties with all the details and decorations and just right photographs. I don’t regret this, but am grateful for where I am at today instead. No stress parties are my thing these days. I try to keep it low key, affordable and most importantly, memorable for my kiddos.

And the best part is, I have found I am more present at the parties, rather than rushing around to make sure everything is perfect. I’m more calm and free to mingle with party guests and the birthday boy or girl. It really has made them more personally special even if the outcome remains less than perfect by today’s Pinterest standards.

For this party, I let my older kids help out a lot with the preparations. Another great way to make the party memorable for them!

We put in some Halloween houses, a handmade Halloween band that my mom made, and Little People farm animals. In the Halloween book, a band of farm animals plays at the party at the end, so this was our attempt to replicate. We put some of the books in the background. You can see even in these photos how much Fletcher has loved Little Blue Truck to death! It has been taped repeatedly 😂.

My oldest daughter, Hazel, has taken a strong interest in baking, so she made and decorated Fletcher’s cake. Which turned out delicious and everyone loved it, especially the birthday boy!

She had just finished baking it that morning, so it was still warm come party time, thus the need for the imperfect cooling rack in these shots. Gotta love it!

My mom, who has shops on Etsy and makes decorations for weddings and various events, was able to quickly whip up a Little Blue Truck inspired cake topper and banner for the big day. Hazel was excited to put her artistic skills to work to finish them off and make them look like the characters from the book. I am so proud of her talent. Watching it bloom is such a joy!

Fletcher even helped a little with the decorating. First, he stole the actual little blue truck that I had for the party. It was a little decorative resin one I found at Jo-Anne’s several years ago and actually would have gone perfectly with the theme as it was filled with pumpkins, but alas, that thing was no where to be found come party time 😒. Hazel replaced it with a blue monster truck from Blaze and The Monster Machines instead. Whatever works, right?!

He made up for it though, but adding his own little “gate” (one of his favorite words) for the animals to be corralled into. He put the animals in there himself, which was so adorable, I just left it that way for the party. There was even a dinosaur and a zebra in there at one point, but they disappeared, so I guess he changed his mind about those.

Altogether, Fletcher had a great time at his second birthday party and I enjoyed how easy going the whole thing was. Having older kids to help is awesome, especially one who LOVES to do all these sorts of things. And it’s always great when I can get my mom to make some decorations that I can’t find the time to do these days.

Letting go of perfectionism is hard. So hard. I still struggle with it, but as time goes by and my children get older, it gets easier to see what really matters. And having everything “look perfect” definitely doesn’t make the list!

Stay tuned later this week for my last minute Halloween decorating! I shared a sneak peek in my first ever Instagram reel yesterday (does learning all of this new fangled social media stuff make anyone else besides me feel old and out of touch? It took me like 20 minutes just to figure out how to do it 🤦‍♀️).

Till next time…

Everything looks so adorable! I also used to try to make everything perfect whenever I entertained. I never enjoyed those times because I was so stressed out and anxious. Later in life I let go of trying to make everything come out so picture-perfect. And just like that – I actually started enjoying entertaining. I could finally talk with my guests and have a good time.
