Fall Home Tour 2016
Welcome to my fall home tour for 2016! This is by far one of my favorite posts every year. The textures, colors and “feelings of fall” go hand in hand with my personal style. Today, I am excited to be joining Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Co. and her ‘Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours’! It is a privilege to join these talented women. Last week, I shared how we refreshed our home with new furniture and accent pieces recently, so today we will get into the details of how I brought fall in this year. A full source list can be found at the bottom of this post if you have questions about where certain things came from.
I love decorating our simple front porch for autumn. This year, we added some Adirondack chairs, a new outdoor mat and a pair of gold lanterns. Everything else I already had including the La Paz and Mohave kilim pillows.
I did go out and spend $22 on pumpkins at the beginning of the month. We found a little roadside farmer’s market and the owner was so generous. We got quite a loot for that price! My husband said it was just because we showed up with our two cute kids and my hugely pregnant belly. Whatever the reason, it was a blessing!
I’ve been wanting to update our exterior ever since we bought this humble little place in 2010, but you know…life happens and other priorities take over.
This season, my husband repainted the trim around the door and I spray painted our house numbers gold for a fresh new look. I added the “hello” mat just because it was cute and I couldn’t resist.
My shell chandelier/wind chime, a souvenir from Myrtle Beach, has been out here all summer. The macrame owl made a reappearance this year as our fall door decoration. My mom gave it to me, and I used it back in 2014 in the same way.
I had hoped to get some mums and other flowers and plants to decorate but haven’t done so yet. In the meantime, I found the best looking weeds wild flowers in my yard to fill a metal bucket and my copper watering can.
Our living room is finally coming together as a cozy, practical family space. It has seen MANY changes throughout the past few years as I navigate what furnishings work best for our young family.
Our little Cairn terrier, Renoir will greet you at the front door and expect you to acknowledge him first and foremost. You can’t get by without.
The new chair and sectional make this space extra warm and inviting for the coming colder months. It’s great that even our extended family can now sit comfortably all together when we have get togethers.
The light fixture in here was also a recent update. I have been wanting something more modern for a couple of years and fell in love with this pendant.
The last thing I am hopeful to change soon is our area rug. This one is practical and easy to clean, but the pattern doesn’t flow with my style. We bought it on a whim, but I was never really in love with it. Stay tuned to see if I change that out in the near future. I can’t help but change things up in here!
Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our shag rug this past summer. The “dog smell” just would not leave it for anything and my pregnancy heightened sense of smell couldn’t take it for one more second. And with a new baby on the way, I am desperate to get everything as cleaned and sanitized as possible…must be nesting…so that rug just had to go.
I am very much looking forward to cuddling with our new addition right here every day!
Only a few simple fall touches made their way into the living room. My main focus was adding warmth, texture, layers and patterns to the space.
My “grandpa” tray now mainly holds homework and school papers, but when it was cleared out, I loosely styled it with some art books, a white pumpkin and game of dominos for the kids to play with.
I have wanted to do some shelf styling for a long time, so I finally decided to move this two piece unit into the living room from the office/playroom. I replaced it will a different one in there and can now style this one to my hearts desire. I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner!
I kept telling myself I “needed” a different style shelf to be able to achieve the look I wanted, but I was wrong. Don’t you hate when you limit yourself like that? I am so happy now when I look over here, and it literally cost me nothing.
Some of the kids’ fall themed books are in a basket on the bottom. I always like to keep seasonal ones and favorites in special places. We love reading together every day.
Now, as we head around the corner we enter the dining room which I went for a more “minimalist” style. I love the clean, simple lines in here.
The pendant light is new to this room as are the bentwood chairs. I purchased the set of chairs at a local antique store. I couldn’t resist when I saw what great shape they were in, not to mention the really good deal the owner gave me. I absolutely love the pop of color they bring in here.
To decorate the table, I used some vintage fruit plates (from my mom’s Etsy shop), copper chargers, a Hmong indigo runner and second hand woven placemat/wall hanging.
I also spray painted several pinecones copper (after I had baked them according to articles I found on Pinterest to kill off any unwanted critters!) and added some sprigs of nature and pheasant feathers.
More pheasant feathers decorate the mantel, along with some small crab apples Hazel and Owen collected from our yard. I wanted to keep it very simple, yet fallish.
And finally, we will head out the back door to our patio that I dolled up a bit for the season. Our family can enjoy time together out here on the days that aren’t too cold in the coming months.
It all started with my vintage rattan chair and side table. I had to move the chair out of our bedroom to make room for the baby’s bassinet, and this was the only spot I could find room for it! It’s great though, because when the kids are playing in the backyard, I can sit here and relax.
I recently came across this vintage rug from SF Rugs and was immediately smitten. My plan is to use it as a runner in our kitchen when the redo is finished (ugh, the never ending renovation).
In the meantime, I have it out here and love the boho vibe it brings to our outdoor space. I will be sharing more about this beauty in a couple of weeks when I hope to have our kitchen ready…or at least as ready as it’s gonna be before the baby is born!
Since I bought the vintage bentwoods for the dining room, I decided to move our metal chairs out here and create a cozy spot for eating al fresco. They surround a simple, vintage card table, but it’s just enough room for our little family. Lots of candles, more pumpkins and some potted plants finish off our patio.
Most days I am beyond tired carrying around this wee one inside of me and caring for a 5 and 4 year old, so those are the only spaces that I was able to get cleaned up and decorated for the season. Like I mentioned, we are still working on the kitchen, and my bedroom has basically become laundry storage for the time being. Sigh. Hopefully, when I get some energy back after the baby comes, I will be able to actually put clothes in drawers…a girl can dream, right?
