Choosing Girl’s Bedroom Furniture

Thank you to Raymour & Flanigan for providing the furniture in this space. All expressed opinions are 100% my own. Full Disclosure.

I am so excited to share with you the progress we have made in Hazel’s bedroom today! If you don’t know, we just moved to our new four bedroom home at the end of July after living in a two bedroom for seven years. Hazel is six and in first grade, and has shared a room with her younger brother, Owen, since they were toddlers. I have been anxiously waiting to make her girly dreams come true for her new room.

Both kids had been sharing Hazel’s room since we moved into the new home. They had been so used to it, the transition to their own spaces was hard. We had their toddler bed mattresses on the floor and not much furniture in here. Both of their rooms were looking pretty sad but it’s hard getting everything moved in and unpacked, especially since we also have baby Violet to take care of! I still have boxes piled high and furniture filling up the garage. Baby steps, am I right?

This is how Hazel’s room looked when we moved in:

Not very pretty. Especially that carpet. That was one of the first things to go! Owen was actually a little sad because his favorite color is red, but I wasn’t sad at all. And neither was Hazel. If it had been hot pink that might have been another story.

That was her main request for her new room: PINK! And horses. And wolves. And girly. And pretty. And fancy. Oh and pink, lots and lots of pink. Did I mention the pink? And not just any pink….BRIGHT pink, magenta pink, HOT pink. PINK!

I did my best to accommodate all of those wishes and here is what we have come up with so far.

We started by heading to our local Raymour & Flanigan furniture store in Victor, NY, to get a feel for what beds might appeal to her. She wanted “fancy” so when she spotted the Mila Platform Bed she was smitten. Which was surprising since it wasn’t hot pink? Win for me.
She wanted a “big” bed so we opted for the full size in hopes that she will grow with it for many years. We also got the King Koil Perfect Response Torrance Euro Top Mattress and a full size bunkie board to go underneath (instead of a box spring). I learned about bunkie boards from the store manager in the showroom. He was able to explain how they help prolong the life of the mattress with platform and bunk beds.
Hazel is in love with her new bed and says  how soft it is and how she could “stay there all day!”
The bed is beautiful with a tufted fabric headboard and French style details. I know she feels like a princess in it.
I managed to get the pink in there with girly bedding, pillows and decorations. I will share more about all of those details soon.
Hazel’s other request was a vanity. She loves being a girly girl and putting on nail polish, lip gloss and jewelry. I found the Florentina 2-Pc. Vanity Set, which was the perfect size for her space. It looks adorable in this little corner of her room and is another piece that can grow with her through the years.
Hazel’s final big request was for a horse. Yup, you heard correctly. The girl wants her own real horse. If you are a regular, you may recall her previous obsession with wolves? I had been planning on doing a whole “girly wolf den” room for her, but when she started to fall in love with horses that was altered. She still loves wolves, but REALLY loves horses.
I found a huge statement piece that I knew she would love. When the Slate Horse Canvas Wall Art arrived she couldn’t believe it. This is pretty much as close as we will get to “getting her a horse”, so I hope it suffices!
I debated about going with such a huge statement piece for her room, since I know she may move out of the horse phase at some point. I decided to go ahead with it because it’s a beautiful piece and very versatile, so we will find it a new space if she outgrows it.
The dresser was purchased at the Raymour & Flanigan clearance center a couple of years ago. We love going there to see what great deals we can find. It has fancy legs for the bottom and a mirror, which we will probably put on when she gets older.
I wanted to make her room cozy and inviting, so we added a new rug, the Emerson Ash Area Rug, and two Cream Lamb Fur Throw Pillows.
Now, she is ready for playdates and slumber parties and daydreaming about horses and being a princess in this room.
When Hazel saw it all coming together she was in love, which made my mama’s heart so happy. I love seeing her eyes light up!
Next week, I will show you the furniture Owen chose for his room.  He is just as excited about having his own space and I can’t wait to share it with all of you. I will share more details from Hazel’s room too along with the rest of our plans for it and all the sources.
I highly recommend the good folks at Raymour & Flanigan if you are looking for furniture for your kiddos or yourself. The delivery was super fast (I went in on a Thursday evening and the big pieces were at our house by Sunday morning). They even put together the beds and furniture for us. My husband was thrilled about that. All of the rest of the items were online purchases with free shipping!
It has been so fun putting together each of the rooms in our new house. It is definitely feeling like home. And I know it is now for the kids with their new rooms looking so good!
Till next time…
